"I live at Brim, Stokes County, N.C., and was born in Patrick County, VA. I am nearly 70 years of age. I think I was born in 1838. My father was Jesse Hooker. I don't know exactly where he was born, but he was partly raised in Virginia. My father was 63 years of age when he died in 1899. I have seen my grandfather, Samuel Hooker. I was about nine years of age when he died. I never heard where he was born. I have heard my father speak of having Indian blood when I was quite small. He said that his father's father was a full-blood Indian, but do not remember that I ever heard him say where he lived. I have been told by others that my grandfather had a home in Stokes County, N.C. My people, as far as I know, lived in Patrick County, Virginia, and Stokes County, N.C. I have always passed as a White man, and was never enrolled for any Indian money. I have never heard of my father being enrolled as an Indian, but do not suppose he was. I do not think he had any other name than Jesse Hooker. I never heard of any Indian name that my grandfather had. I came to North Carolina about 20 years ago. My children, Mary Jane Cook, who lives in Stokes County, Emily Meshack, who lives in Surry County, Bettie Hodge, who lives in Colorado, Florence Hooker (married a Hooker) who lives in Stokes, Rowena Hooker who lives in Stokes, and Jesse Melvin Hooker, who lives in Stokes County have filed applications. My father always claimed that he was a Cherokee Indian."
