• Obituary/Death Notice: Newark Evening News, 21 Oct 1909. 4 Matthias Wheaton, for many years a prominent merchant of East Orange, died at his home, 139 Arlington avenue, that city, last night of heart failure, following an illness of three weeks. Mr. Wheaton was born in Caldwell sixty-four years ago and was a descendent of old and prominent families of that place. When a young man he came to this city, where he lived until his marriage to Miss Sarah C. Speer, of Fairfield, on April 22, 1866, when he removed to East Orange, where he embarked in the butcher and grocery business. Mr. Wheaton was prominent in the Methodist Church, and took a great interest in the work of the Sanford Street M.E. Church, of which he was a trustee and member of the official board for many years. He was at one time president of the church trustees. In the Civil War he served in Company H, Thirty-ninth Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers. He was a member of Uzal Dodd Post of Orange. He was a charter member of the East Orange Board of Trade. Besides his widow, Mr. Wheaton is survived by two sons and two daughters. They are Charles W. Wheaton, of Orange; Fred W. Wheaton, of Summit, and Mrs. William J. Birdsall and Mrs. Edward L. Stasse, of East Orange. The funeral services will probably be held at his late home on Saturday and will be conducted by Rev. Berryman H. McCoy, pastor of the Sanford Street Church, assisted by Rev. Thomas G. Spencer, of Jersey City, and Rev. Dr. Ralph B. Urmy, of Morristown, former pastors of the church.


Matthias married Sarah C. SPEER, daughter of Zena C. SPEER and Lucinda SPEER (MAIDEN UNKNOWN), on 22 Apr 1866 in Fairfield, Essex County, New Jersey.1 (Sarah C. SPEER was born in 1850 in New Jersey.)
