"In 1698, James removed from New London to Mohegan, and settled upon a tract of land granted by Owaneco, the Mohegan Sachem, to James' wife Sarah, adjoining lands of her father, Samuel Rogers, who had already settled there. Between the Sachems and the Rogers family there had ever existed a strong and intimate personal friendship; and in this friendly releation James and his wife Sarah warmly participated; James himself becoming an especial favorite with the whole tribe. Owaneco and his sucessors were lavish in their grants of land to James and Sarah Harris and they soon became large landholders. Grants and transfers of land are found on record all over ancient Mohegan, from New London as far northerly as Norwich and Colchester. On May 10, 1710 Owaneco passed in a sweeping general deed to four persons, viz., John Livingston, Robert Denison, Samuel Rogers, Jr., and James Harris, all the Mohegan lands between New London and Norwich, comprising many thousand acres. The price paid was fifty pounds.
On May 20, 1714, James was commissioned Lieutenant of the North Co. of New London, and by this title was ever known, although afterwards commissioned Captain of another Co. in Colchester.

About 1760, Lebbeus removed with all his family to Horton, Kings County, Nova Scotia, which, about this period, appears to have been a great point of migration for our Harris ancestry. Tradition has it that these early Harris emigrants were the founders of a numerious and conspicuous line of the name in Nova Scotia and other British American Provinces; many of whom have been of public note, and several have held seats in the Colonial Parliaments."

Noted events in her life were:

Research Notes: Harris, James of New London, Connecticut and His Descendants; From 1640 to 1878 by Nathaniel Harris Morgan, 1878. "The story of this idolized child is a sad one. Sole heiress of a princely fortune; a great personal beauty and loveliness of character; accomplished in all that the best local instructors of that day could impart; at the age of 18 her parents decided to send her abroad for a couple of years for higher instruction in England, and for travel in Europe for the advantages of foreign social cuture. On the eve of her departure she was inoculated in order to guard against the danger of small pox, then the dread of foreign travelers. But the virus proved fatal, and she died, after a few days of extreme suffering, in the pest-house at Saybrook. This sudden and tragic blow fell with crushing weight upon her parents, and cast a dark pall of gloom over the wide region throughout which she was known and beloved."

He afterwards removed to a part of the large farm of his son Alpheus, near "Spanish Hill," of legendary notoriety, where he lived with his son Samuel until his death. He was an upright and intelligent man, shrewd and somewhat eccentric and facetious. To a question once put to him as to the best business or occupation for a young man, his ready reply was that "loaning money was the best business he knew of, but very difficult to establish. He was a farmer."

27. Nathaniel HARRIS (Jonathan16, James (Lieut.)4, James1) was born on 2 Apr 1743 in Colchester (Salem Parish), New London County, Connecticut.

Noted events in his life were:

Research Notes: Harris, James of New London, Connecticut and His Descendants; From 1640 to 1878 by Nathaniel Harris Morgan, 1878. "Nathaniel and his wife Mary Tozer settled on the old Harris Homestead, in Salem Parish, now Salem township, where they ever lived, and where they died; and where all their thirteen children, five sons and eight daughters, were born. It is noteworthy that all these children lived past middle age, all married and became heads of families, and that no shadow of evil habit, vice, crime, or stain of reputation ever rested upon a single one of them.
Nathaniel served in the war of the Revolution for a least six months, from May 25 to November 25, 1777 and was at one time with the army at the "Head of Elk" in Pennsylvania; and although tradition among his children was that he served during the war, there is no record of longer service, and the very regular births of his children during that war serves to show that he was never long absent from home. He held a commission, however, as Captain in the State militia.
He was a farmer. He was a proud and high-toned man, proud of his lineage and blood; pruod of his little wife and of his daughters; proud of his farm stock, of his full crops, and of his abundance and rich variety of choice fruits. Of stalwart frame and stately bearing, he was ever tender and gentle as a belted knight to all womankind and to children; but among men he was dignified, austere, and even imperious and lordly. His little wife Mary, mated him most fitly in her sphere, ruling well her household, and inspiring all by the gentleness and potency of her influence and example. In his eyes she was a "spirit of the just, made perfect," his daughters were all "angels."

Research Notes: SAR Application of David M. Harris #6102. Squire Harris. Born in Salem Conn. 28th April 1762, removed in infancy with his parents to Goshen, Orange Co., N.Y. He enlisted as a drummer in the Revolutionary Army in 1776 when only 14 years old, became a drum major and served to the close of the war in 1783 when 21 years old. He then settled in Newark, N.J. as a farmer where he afterward resided. He married there Mary Davis, 13 January 1784, who was born 10th June 1761 and died 11th October 1851, aged 90. He died 4 July 1825, aged 63 years. All their eleven children were born in Newark and all those who married were married to parties residing there.
The above is copied and printed history of James Harris of Boston, Mass., and his descendents, 1640 to 1878, compiled by the late Nathaniel Harris Morgan of Hartford, Conn.
Squire Harris was in that portion of the Revolutionary army which was under the direct command of Washington. He was the drummer boy who stood beside the canon when Molly Pitcher took the place of her husband at the Battle of Monmouth.
He was in the ranks of the paraders at the reception of Lafayette on his visit to Newark in 1824 when the parade was halted in Military Park. He was recognized and greeted with a hand shake by Lafayette.
During the War of 1812 he acted as recruiting officer, he paraded through town with a drum, recruits falling in line and parading to headquarters which were at present No. 36 Bridge St.
He often remarked he could go to a certain hickory tree in Trenton and take from among its roots a bag of bullets which he had there buried to prevent them from falling into the hands of the enemy.
He was represented in the War of 1812 by his son Russel D. and the was of 1861 by several including myself, of his grandsons and great-grandsons

Research Notes: DAR Application for Ella Harris Smith #93271. Record and Pension office war department:
Squire Harris served as a musician (fifer) in Capt. John Grahams company of N.Y. troops selected from the militia of Ulster Co. for defence of the state of N.Y. Time of enlistment - Aug. 4th. 1776. 14 years old. The records show that he served as fifer and drummer in Capt. John Doughty's Co. 2nd Artillery Regm't Continental troops commanded by Colonel John Lamb (also called the N.Y. Artillery Regm't.) He then reenlisted May 1st 1777 for three years, was at Valley Forge May 1778 and Morristown, was discharged from service 1780. Participated in battle of Trenton, Princeton and Monmouth, said after the war that he could go on the Trenton battlefield and find among the roots of a certain tree on the field a bag of bullets secreted there by himself (they being too heavy to carry) to prevent them from falling in the hands of the enemy. Traditions say he took the place of Molly Pitcher in carrying water, on her taking the place of her husband at the gun when he fell. He also served in a regiment commanded by Colonel Weisenfels from 1781 to 1782. He also served as drum-major in Capt. Joseph Burn's Co. (Dodd) 1st. Regm't. N.J. militia 1812.
