• Research Notes: Harris, James of New London, Connecticut and His Descendants; From 1640 to 1878 by Nathaniel Harris Morgan, 1878. 1 "The story of this idolized child is a sad one. Sole heiress of a princely fortune; a great personal beauty and loveliness of character; accomplished in all that the best local instructors of that day could impart; at the age of 18 her parents decided to send her abroad for a couple of years for higher instruction in England, and for travel in Europe for the advantages of foreign social cuture. On the eve of her departure she was inoculated in order to guard against the danger of small pox, then the dread of foreign travelers. But the virus proved fatal, and she died, after a few days of extreme suffering, in the pest-house at Saybrook. This sudden and tragic blow fell with crushing weight upon her parents, and cast a dark pall of gloom over the wide region throughout which she was known and beloved."
