• Research Notes: Harris, James of New London, Connecticut and His Descendants; From 1640 to 1878 by Nathaniel Harris Morgan, 1878. 1 "James Harris Jr., was the celebrated Saybrook merchant. On Feb. 14, 1728, he bought of Peter Pratt, a house, barn, and three acres of land at Saybrook, removed to that town the spring following, and built a store upon what is still called the "Harris wharf,: where he afterwards became widely known as a very extensive and successful merchant, having a lasrge export and import trade with the West Indies; and also importing from France and the East Indies, spices and fine fabrics of laces, silks, and brocades. His ledger from 1720 to 1743 is still preserved, and shows large dealings in general merchandise."
James married Ann GILBERT, daughter of Captain Samuel GILBERT and Mary ROGERS.
