Otis. 1 "Stephen Otis settled in Halifax, Vermont, where he was a fairly prosperous farmer and occupied a very prominent position among his townspeople, being regarded as a man of kind heart and excellent judgment. He was a justice of the peace for forty years; from 1808-12 was a member of the legislature of Vermont; also a member of the Baptist church. He is said to have been the first man in the region of his home to adopt total abstinence principles of his family and among his help on his farm, giving to those so employed a drink consisting of sweetened water and ginger, instead of the intoxicant made use of in those days."
