• Research Notes: Otis Family in America by William A. Otis. 1 "Elisha G. Otis was the original inventor of the fast passenger elevator, an innovation which rendered the skyscraper a commercial possibility. Final improvement of his invention by his son, Charles R., was granted a patent January 15, 1861. The business using his inventions, was first carried on by his sons, and later by a great corporation bearing the Otis name. Among the inventions of Elisha were a machine for making blindstaples; an automatic wood-turning machine; a railway bridge for carrying trains across the river without impeding navigation, and at the same time doing away with the dangers of a draw; a very ingenious automatic steam plough; and a rotary oven for use in the manufacture of bread. From early life Elisha entertained ardent temperance and anti-slavery views. He was a Whig in politics and later a Republican."

Elisha married Susan A. HOUGHTON, daughter of Artemus HOUGHTON and Lois MATHER, on 2 Jun 1834. (Susan A. HOUGHTON was born on 27 Aug 1811 and died on 25 Feb 1842.)
