• Obituary/Death Notice: Easton Express, 12 Jul 1952. 4 Joe B. Garis, 78, of 2140 Freemansburg avenue, an employee of Taylor-Wharton Iron and Steel Company for 65 years before he was pensioned last January, died yesterday at 7:45 p.m. in Easton Hospital.
Mr. Garis was chief inspector in the pattern department of the steel company at the time of his retirement. He had been in failing health since last October, and entered the hospital on June 27.
He began his long career in the steel industry as a boy of 13 by taking a job at the old William Wharton Jr. and Company in Philadelphia. In 1912 the Taylor Iron and Steel Company absorbed the Wharton firm, and three years later Mr. Garis came here to work at the newly built plant.
Born near Jenkintown, Mr. Garis was the son of the late Mahlon and Sarah Beidelman Garis. He resided in Palmer Township for many years, moving to Wilson about two years ago to reside with his daughter, Mrs. Blanche Vought, of the Freemansburg avenue address. His wife, Anna Schultz Garis, died about four years ago.
Surviving in addidtion to the daughter with whom he resided are a son, Harry G. Garis, of Brodheadsville, seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother Edward; and a sister Mrs. Charlie Rothrock, both of Philadelphia.

GARIS FUNERAL - Funeral services for Joseph B. Garis, 78, of 2140 Freemansburg avenue, were held this afternoon at the Ashton funeral home. Mr. Garis, an employee of Taylor-Wharton Iron and Steel Company for 65 years, died Friday afternoon at Easton Hospital.
The Rev. George W. Eppehimer, pastor of Calvary Memorial Methodist Churh, officiated. Interment was in Northampton Memorial Shrine. Pallbearers were Emil Peterson, Stanley Kocher, Fred Sandt, Sterling Kelchner, Norman Barringer and Clarence Holdsworth, all fellow employees of Mr. Garis at the steel company.


Joseph married Annie SULZ, daughter of Henry SULZ and Margaret BUTTERSTEIN. (Annie SULZ was born on 26 Apr 1871 in Albany, Albany County, New York, died on 17 Jun 1948 in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania and was buried on 21 Jun 1948 in Northampton Memorial Shrine, Northampton County, Pennsylvania.)


Joseph next married Catherine GARIS (MAIDEN UNKNOWN) in 1899. (Catherine GARIS (MAIDEN UNKNOWN) was born in 1884 in Pennsylvania.)
