• Research Notes: Stusse Narrative Written by Bennett Stusse, 1997. "Fredrick was born in Switzerland (German-Swiss). Had an older brother (name unknown) and a younger brother (name unknown) who married a French woman. They eventually lived in Missouri and had no children. The brother was a soldier of fortune. Older than that, nothing is known of Fredrick's family.
A tailor by trade, he was not allowed to enter the United States because of a physical deformity. (He wore a "rocker" on one foot. "Was dropped by a nanny as a baby".) He made several trips to the U.S. while working as a ship's tailor.
He met Hannah on his "last" voyage and jumped ship to enter the U.S. and marry her. Hannah was coming to the U.S. in "search" of her brother, whom she never found. Her brother was in the Dutch Army and due to a treaty, served with the German Army. He didn't like it and left for the U.S. prior to Hannah.
Hannah was from LaHague Holland. Her mother was a Lady in Waiting to the Queen. Hannah was coming to the U.S. to visit her brother and met and married Frederick. Her family disowned her for marrying a "commoner. "
They came to the U.S. prior to the Civil War (year unknown, but think around 1845). They lived in New York City many years and moved to Irvington, N.J. in 1871. They had several children. Frederick was a tailor in New York and made uniforms for the Union Army officers. He went back to Switzerland once for a visit and didn't like it."

• Research Notes: Stasse, John W.; Bio. & Gen. History of Newark and Essex Cty.;Vol. II; Pub. 1898. "Fredolin was a son of Frederick and Annie Stasse, natives of Switzerland, in which country his birth also occurred. He came to America in 1850 and took up his residence in New York city, where he became largely interested in the sale and exchange of real estate, and also dealt largely in real estate in the city of Brooklyn. He became prominately known in both cities, and by his well managed business affairs accumulated a handsome competence, which enabled him to lay aside business affairs and retire to private life in 1870, at which time he removed to Orange. Politically he was formally a Democrat, but now is a stanch advocate of Republican principles. His faithful wife (Johanna) died in 1875, at the age of thrity-seven years. She was an earnest Christian woman and held membership in the German Lutheran Church."

• Obituary/Death Notice: Newark Evening News, 10 Jul 1946. Edward L. Stasse Sr., former East Orange police recorder and former Essex County deputy surrogate, died yesterday of a heart attack on a New York Central Railroad train at Windsor, Ontario. He was 65.
Canadian custom officials found Mr. Stasse stricken in his seat. He boarded the train at Detroit and had a ticket to Brick Church, East Orange.
Mr. Stasse was returning home from an inspection of the Van Houten Gold Mines at Dryden, Ontario, of which he was president. The mine, recently acquired, is in the process of development. His son, Edward L. Stasse, Jr., said today that his father had suffered a heart attack about four weeks ago.
The elder Stasse was born in East Orange, a son of the late John and Mary Youmans Stasse. He was graduated from East Orange High School and received a bachelor of arts degree from Wesleyan University. He studied law at home, was admitted to the New Jersey Bar in 1919 and became a counselor in 1921.
He was appointed East Orange recorder shortly after admittance to practice and continued in that post until 1930, three years after being named deputy surrogate and advisory master in the Orphans Court. He held the two county posts until November 1939, and since then devoted his time to private practice in East Orange with his son, specializing in estate work.
As deputy surrogate, Edward was a confidant of the four Essex County common pleas judges. They referred to him as special master of hearings of disputes over contested wills. His opinions were accepted without question because of his expert knowledge of probate work.
When former Surrogate Hoffman refused to reappoint him in 1939, the judges intervened unsuccessfully with the Essex County Clean Government leadership. Because of his identy as a Mayor Martens man, Edward had not been in favor of Clean Government.
Mr. Stasse first gained political notice in East Orange as a candidate for the Republican nomination for councilman in the Second Ward. He campaigned with Mayor Martens but lost in a close race. Martens subsequently appointed him recorder.
At one time, Edward was in law partnership with Guy George Gabrielson, former Essex County assemblyman and now Republican national committeeman.

• Research Notes: Stucy, Kathleen Heath; research and personal knowledge. "Sometime after my grandfather Owen was born in October 1905 and before January 1910, my Great Grandfather, Henry Stusse ended up in the Essex County Hospital for the Insane in Cedar Grove, NJ. He is listed as an inmate and remained there until his death in February 1924. The main cause of death is Cirrhosis, however, there's a secondary cause listed, Epileptic Insanity
I found an article written by a doctor in 1899 explaining what epileptic insanity is and I wonder if perhaps Henry Stusse may have done a similar thing:
"EPILEPTIC INSANITY: AN UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE."
"SIR,-In my surgery, the other morning, I found a man behaving himself so drunken-like that I was ordering him out, when he suddenly turned, threw his arms round me, and bore me beneath him backwards on to the form, where he held me so firmly that I had to call for assistance. Even then I could only loosen myself from his clutches by dealing him a severe blow with the clenched fist under his left ear, when he relaxed his grip and dragged me across the floor, where I managed to escape from him. He then staggered backwards on to the form, where he sat in a semistupor as if he had just woke out of a dream, and asked what was the matter, and what we had been doing to him, betraying no consciousness of the scuffle in which he had been such an active participant. I afterwards visited him at home, and from his wife I learned that he was a chronic epileptic, and had given her endless trouble. He again denied all knowledge of the occurrence, apologised profusely for his unconscious offence, and I am perfectly satisfied of his bonafides. Apart from my exceptional share in the episode, the case is interesting from a medico-legal point of view. It was evidently a case of unconscious cerebration, following upon a slight epileptoid seizure, and resulting in a transient attack of epileptic insanity, during which he was, of course, irresponsible for his actions. And yet, during those brief moments of moral irresponsibility, he had committed a criminal offence for the consequences of which, no matter what they might have been, he could have been held liable in the eyes of the law.
