• Obituary/Death Notice: Newark Evening News, 6 Apr 1903. 14 Charles L. Youmans, a pioneer and one of the most familiar figures in the hatting industry in the Oranges, died suddenly yesterday morning at his residence, 28 Laurel street, Orange, aged seventy-four years. Mr. Youmans, who had retired at the usual time on Saturday night, seemed at the time to be in his usual buoyant frame of mine and was apparently perfectly well, but when his wife went to awaken him yesterday morning he was very ill, and he died before Dr. William M. Brien, of West Orange, who was hastily summoned, could reach him. Cerebral apoplexy caused death.
Mr. Youmans was born in Orange on October 2, 1828. He spent the early part of his life on his father's farm and later attended the district schools, and when he was unable to attend in the day time, he went to night school. At the age of eighteen he began his career as a hatter becoming an apprentice. He continued at the business and at the time of his death was still active. He married Miss Catherine Little in Orange, July 3, 1853. Miss Little was born near Liberty Corner, in May, 1833, and she was a daughter of Benjamin and Mary Little.
Mr. Youmans is survived by three children, Mrs. John W. Stasse, of East Orange; Benjamin Franklin Youmans, a hat manufacturer of Orange Valley, and William B. Youmans, of Orange. He was connected at one time with the First Presbyterian Church of Orange. In early life, he espoused the Whig party, and at the dissolution of that party he became a Republican and was steadfast to that party until his death.
The funeral services will be conducted at his late home tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by Rev. Frank W. Hodgson, pastor of the Orange Valley Congregational Church and the Interment will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

• Research Notes: Youmans, B. Franklin; Bio. & Gen. History of Newark and Essex Cty.; Vol. I; Pub. 1898. 15 Charles spent his boyhood days on the homestead farm. His educational privileges were meager. He attended the district schools in the winter for a few months, but his training was mostly received in the country night schools. When he had attained the age of eighteen he began an apprenticeship at the hat-maker's trade and has made that business his vocation through life. He has now attained the age of three-score and ten years, but is still well preserved and yet follows the pursuit which he learned in his youth, being now in his son's factory. The family was formerly connected with the Presbyterian church. Charles was a Whig in his political belief in early life, and after the dissolution of that party he joined the ranks of the new Republican party, which he still supports.

Charles married Katherine LITTELL, daughter of Benjamin LITTELL and Mary COMPTON, on 3 Jul 1853 in Orange, Essex County, New Jersey.1 (Katherine LITTELL was born on 2 May 1833 in Liberty Corner, Somerset, New Jersey, died on 14 Oct 1907 in Orange, Essex County, New Jersey 16 and was buried on 16 Oct 1907 in Rosedale Cemetery, Orange, Essex County, New Jersey 11.)
