• Research Notes: Stusse Narrative Written by Bennett Stusse, 1997. 22 "Fredrick was born in Switzerland (German-Swiss). Had an older brother (name unknown) and a younger brother (name unknown) who married a French woman. They eventually lived in Missouri and had no children. The brother was a soldier of fortune. Older than that, nothing is known of Fredrick's family.
A tailor by trade, he was not allowed to enter the United States because of a physical deformity. (He wore a "rocker" on one foot. "Was dropped by a nanny as a baby".) He made several trips to the U.S. while working as a ship's tailor.
He met Hannah on his "last" voyage and jumped ship to enter the U.S. and marry her. Hannah was coming to the U.S. in "search" of her brother, whom she never found. Her brother was in the Dutch Army and due to a treaty, served with the German Army. He didn't like it and left for the U.S. prior to Hannah.
Hannah was from LaHague Holland. Her mother was a Lady in Waiting to the Queen. Hannah was coming to the U.S. to visit her brother and met and married Frederick. Her family disowned her for marrying a "commoner. "
They came to the U.S. prior to the Civil War (year unknown, but think around 1845). They lived in New York City many years and moved to Irvington, N.J. in 1871. They had several children. Frederick was a tailor in New York and made uniforms for the Union Army officers. He went back to Switzerland once for a visit and didn't like it."

• Research Notes: Stasse, John W.; Bio. & Gen. History of Newark and Essex Cty.;Vol. II; Pub. 1898. 11 "Fredolin was a son of Frederick and Annie Stasse, natives of Switzerland, in which country his birth also occurred. He came to America in 1850 and took up his residence in New York city, where he became largely interested in the sale and exchange of real estate, and also dealt largely in real estate in the city of Brooklyn. He became prominately known in both cities, and by his well managed business affairs accumulated a handsome competence, which enabled him to lay aside business affairs and retire to private life in 1870, at which time he removed to Orange. Politically he was formally a Democrat, but now is a stanch advocate of Republican principles. His faithful wife (Johanna) died in 1875, at the age of thrity-seven years. She was an earnest Christian woman and held membership in the German Lutheran Church."

• Research Notes: Stusse Genealogy Letter by Ruth Helwig Kilgore to Joan Helwig; 3 March 1979. 6 "Fredolin Stusse was the father of your great grandmother, Sophia Stusse Helwig. He was born in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Came to America in the early 1840's. Bought property on Bartlett Street in Kings County, N.Y. and opened a costume tailor shop, that was his profession. I only know his wife's name was Johanna. They had a family of seven children. The family moved to New Jersey in 1869.
Fredolin Stusse lost his first wife in 1878. She was born in 1834. My mother was the last child born to Johanna and Fredolin.
