When John's oldest son attended college, he was told by a Professor that the 'ü' in his name was pronounced in English as an 'a'. The family legally changed their name to Stasse. The other Stüsse families kept the spelling Stusse, no marks over the 'u'."

• Research Notes: John W. Stasse; Bio. & Gen. History of Newark and Essex Cty.;Vol. II; Pub. 1898. 2 "John W. Stasse is a man whom to know is to respect and honor, for his life in all its varied relations has been marked by the utmost fidelity to duty and to principal. He is now ably filling the position of assistance electrician of the East Orange fire department, and has the confidence and regard of all with whom he is thus associated. John acquired his early education in the schools of New York City, and remained under the parental roof until seventeen years of age, at which time he began to learn the hatter's trade in the factory of Whiting and Dorn, of Orange. After completing a regular term of apprenticeship he pursued the trade until 1894, when he was appointed to his present position, as assistant electrician in the East Orange fire department, by Mr. Thompson, president of the board. This is one of the most efficient fire departments in the state, and his own faithful and able service fully sustains this well merited reputation. John is a member of the Exempt Firemen's Association of East Orange and is now serving as one of its trusteres. Politically he is a Republican, content to support the party without seeking returns in the way of official preferment. He is a member of the Sanford Street Methodist Episcopal church, of which he has been trustee for twelve years. John takes great interest in its work, and does all in his power for its advancement and growth."
