• Obituary/Death Notice: Newark Evening News, 10 Jul 1946. 19 Edward L. Stasse Sr., former East Orange police recorder and former Essex County deputy surrogate, died yesterday of a heart attack on a New York Central Railroad train at Windsor, Ontario. He was 65.
Canadian custom officials found Mr. Stasse stricken in his seat. He boarded the train at Detroit and had a ticket to Brick Church, East Orange.
Mr. Stasse was returning home from an inspection of the Van Houten Gold Mines at Dryden, Ontario, of which he was president. The mine, recently acquired, is in the process of development. His son, Edward L. Stasse, Jr., said today that his father had suffered a heart attack about four weeks ago.
The elder Stasse was born in East Orange, a son of the late John and Mary Youmans Stasse. He was graduated from East Orange High School and received a bachelor of arts degree from Wesleyan University. He studied law at home, was admitted to the New Jersey Bar in 1919 and became a counselor in 1921.
He was appointed East Orange recorder shortly after admittance to practice and continued in that post until 1930, three years after being named deputy surrogate and advisory master in the Orphans Court. He held the two county posts until November 1939, and since then devoted his time to private practice in East Orange with his son, specializing in estate work.
As deputy surrogate, Edward was a confidant of the four Essex County common pleas judges. They referred to him as special master of hearings of disputes over contested wills. His opinions were accepted without question because of his expert knowledge of probate work.
When former Surrogate Hoffman refused to reappoint him in 1939, the judges intervened unsuccessfully with the Essex County Clean Government leadership. Because of his identy as a Mayor Martens man, Edward had not been in favor of Clean Government.
Mr. Stasse first gained political notice in East Orange as a candidate for the Republican nomination for councilman in the Second Ward. He campaigned with Mayor Martens but lost in a close race. Martens subsequently appointed him recorder.
At one time, Edward was in law partnership with Guy George Gabrielson, former Essex County assemblyman and now Republican national committeeman.
Prior to his law career. which he began in his middle 20's, Edward was employed by C.B. Cottrell & sons, printing press manufacturers of New York.
Mr. Stasse, whose home was at 139 North Arlington avenue, East Orange, spent most of his time at his Summer home at Pines Lake, near Pompton. An amateur cook, he had two fully equipped kitchens at his Pines Lake home.
Mr. Stasse was one of the organizers of the Rotary Club of East Orange. He also was a member of Hope Lodge, F. and A.M., Sanford Street Methodist Church, the National Republican Club, New York and the Upper Montclair Country Club. He was a director of the Monroe Calculating Machine Co., Orange, a trustee of the Record Ambulance of the Oranges, and of the Bertrell Fund for Underprivileged Children.
Surviving besides his son are his wife, Mrs. Grace Wheaton Stasse; two daughters, Miss Virginia W. and Mrs. Wilma W. Mortensen of Bloomfield, and two brothers, B. Frank of East Orange and John W. of Springfield, Mass.

Edward married Grace D. WHEATON, daughter of Matthias WHEATON and Sarah C. SPEER, on 14 Nov 1906.1 (Grace D. WHEATON was born in 1882 in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, died on 29 Mar 1967 in Wayne, Passaic County, New Jersey and was buried on 31 Mar 1967 in Fairmount Cemetery, Newark, Essex County, New Jersey.)
